New taskforce set to combat sexual and gender-based violence in Jonglei<\/h3>

UNMISS News, April 3, 2025<\/em><\/p>

Significant efforts are being made to combat the sexual and gender-based violence that perseveres in plaguing mostly women and girls in South Sudan. In another bid to put an end to these harmful practices, Jonglei State has launched a taskforce set to coordinate all actions taken to tackle them. The objective of the new body is to equip relevant authorities and other stakeholders with the tools and strategies needed to prevent and respond to incidents of gender-based violence of a sexual or other nature.<\/p>

The African Union (AU) Commission said it is dispatching a high-level delegation of the AU Panel of the Wise to Juba, the capital of South Sudan, to deal with escalating tension in the fragile country. In a statement issued Monday, the pan-African bloc stated that after cordial direct talks with President Salva Kiir Mayardit of South Sudan, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the Commission, addressed the evolving political situation and the recent violence in Nasir County in the country\u2019s Upper Nile State.<\/p>

Armed youth from Mayom County in Unity State seized control of Abiemnhom town in the Ruweng Administrative Area on Wednesday morning following clashes, a local official said. Mario Deng Ayot, the commissioner of Abiemnhom County, told Radio Tamazuj that the armed youth from neighboring Mayom County \u201ccaptured the town from the authorities\u201d in an attack that began overnight.<\/p>
