UN renews South Sudan mission\u2019s mandate for 9 days<\/h3>

The U.N. Security Council on Wednesday extended the mandate of the U.N. Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) for nine days, until May 9, as tensions escalate between the country\u2019s political leaders. The short-term extension, approved unanimously in Resolution 2778 (2025), allows the mission to continue using \u201call necessary means\u201d to carry out its tasks beyond its original expiration date of April 30.<\/p>

The United States withdrew its military personnel from the United Nations peacekeeping mission in South Sudan a day after Secretary of State Marco Rubio\u2019s announcement revoking all visas held by citizens of the small, landlocked African country. \u201cThe United States has temporarily withdrawn U.S. Military Officers from UNMISS [UN Mission in South Sudan] after the State Department drew down Chief of Mission personnel in Juba to minimal staffing levels given the security situation,\u201d a spokesperson from the State Department press office told PassBlue in an email.<\/p>

The Security Council today extended the mandate of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) by nine days, until 9 May, apparently to allow more time for members to discuss the matter amid escalating tensions in the country. UNMISS was initially established for one year from 9 July 2011, under resolution 1996 (2011), with the intent to renew for further periods as needed. Since then, the Mission has been renewed consistently with the Council determining that \u201cthe situation in South Sudan continues to pose a threat to international peace and security in the region\u201d. The Council held a briefing on the country\u2019s situation on 16 April.<\/p>
