The Acting Governor of Western Equatoria State has strongly condemned the practice of detaining men and women together in makeshift cells in Gangura, Yambio, calling it \u201canother crime inside.\u201d James Severino Morris, who also serves as the Minister for Local Government and Law Enforcement, spoke in Gangura Payam yesterday. He voiced deep concern over the lack of proper police infrastructure, which forces officers to hold all suspects, regardless of gender, in a single, community-built room.<\/p>\n

South Sudan warring parties accused of human rights abuse<\/h3>\n

Mr. Edmund Yakani, executive director of CEPO, said they have documented various cases of human rights abuses since the outbreak of violence in mid-March 2025 between government troops and the Nuer White Army militia. South Sudan\u2019s civil society organization, Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), on Thursday alleged the warring parties have perpetrated serious human rights violations against civilians in the country.<\/p>\n

Mayom local leaders welcome SSPDF disarmament exercise, but warn of approach<\/h3>\n

The paramount chief and local youth leader in Mayom County in Unity State have welcomed the order by the SSPDF for civilians to hand in all illegal firearms. They, however, said that the exercise should be expanded to encompass other areas, because when done in one area, the disarmed people are left vulnerable to attacks from their neighbours who still have firearms.<\/p>\n

UN-backed youth peacebuilding initiative launched in Aweil<\/h3>\n

The South Sudanese government, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and local partner Hope Africa South Sudan (HASS) launched a youth peacebuilding initiative Tuesday in Aweil, Northern Bahr el Ghazal State. The launch coincided with a two-day youth peacebuilding workshop, where officials urged participants to spread messages of peace and reconciliation in their communities. Pia Philip Michael, Undersecretary of South Sudan\u2019s National Ministry of Peacebuilding, said the project aims to strengthen youth involvement in peace efforts.<\/p>\n
