New facility aims at supporting prisoners to complete their sentences with dignity

Poor sanitation and overcrowded facilities that leave little to no privacy for inmates at the Magwi Prison have been long overdue for replacement. This week, thanks to joint efforts by the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and implementing partner, the Community Initiative for Development Association (CIDA), construction has begun on a new facility in this conflict-prone county in Eastern Equatoria state.
South Sudan liaises with Sudan on nationals’ safety amid conflict

South Sudan stated it is in contact with authorities in neighbouring Sudan regarding the situation of its nationals and has provided contact details for coordination amid the ongoing conflict. The conflict in Sudan has severely affected South Sudanese nationals residing there. Many lack connections in South Sudan, having been born when Sudan was a single country before the 2011 separation, which followed a referendum on self-determination.
US withdraws its peacekeepers from South Sudan

The United States has recently withdrawn a group of peacekeepers from the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), sources told Radio Tamazuj. This has been done without any public statement or explanation from UNMISS or the US contingent. In response to a query from Radio Tamazuj on Monday, a U.N. spokesperson in New York confirmed Tuesday that the withdrawal was temporary.
SSPDF Repulses Attack on Pigi County Headquarters

The commissioner of Pigi County in Jonglei State said the SSPDF repulsed an attack by a combined force of the SPLA-IO and the White Army, a force comprised of armed Nuer youth, on the county headquarters, Canal, on Saturday. A few days ago, local authorities had warned of a looming attack. Pigi County, located on the northern edge of Jonglei State, sits at the confluence of the Sobat and Nile Rivers, just south of Malakal.
South Sudan’s military recaptures key town from White Army militia

South Sudan’s army said it had recaptured a key town in Upper Nile state that it lost to an ethnic Nuer militia in March in clashes which led to the arrest of First Vice President Riek Machar and a spiralling political crisis. President Salva Kiir has served in an uneasy power-sharing government with Machar since a 2018 peace deal ended a civil war between fighters loyal to the two men which killed hundreds of thousands of people.
